The Mythic Age was a time of myths and legends. So far back in time, most events were remembered only in distorted tales and conflicting traditions. This was a time where the gods were still very active in the world. It ended less than ten thousand years ago. (Dun173, p.41)

Cosmic Genesis Edit

In the beginning was a point of infinite potential. A tiny disturbance caused this epitome of perfection to erupt, splitting existence asunder. From the detritus coalesced the Astral Sea and the Elemental Chaos. The gods and primordials arose out of the respective planes. Other lesser entities, possibly the angels and slaads, also arose during this time. (W&M, p.56; MM, p.14, 237)

Bane was one of three gods born at the same time. These brothers were named Kord, Tuern and Achra. (DR372, p.26)

Before the Dawn War, the djinns boasted the most advanced society of all the elemental races. (SotEC, p.52)

The Pillars of Creation in the Elemental Chaos have existed before the world's genesis. (SoteC, p.82)

Birth of the World Edit

The primordials created the titans as helpers to create a world out of the creation-stuffs that eddied between the Elemental Chaos and the Astral Sea, discarding bits which are too bright or too dark. These pieces clustered into the Feywild and the Shadowfell. The world was then one of elemental fury, engulfed in an endless cycle of destruction and rebuilding. (DMG, p.161; W&M, p.56)

In the beginning, giants of every kind labored long for their elemental overseers to construct a place of ever-shifting primordial wonder, in the perfect image of the Elemental Chaos that had birthed it. (SotEC, p.58)

The primordials created hell hounds. (MM, p.160)

Fomorians rose as the Feywild’s answer to the titans of the world, while death giants coalesced out of the Shadowfell as the world began to know mortality. Fomorians created cyclopes as servants and took gnomes as slaves. (W&M, p.32)

Gods Discover the World Edit

The gods looked down from the Astral Sea and saw what the primordials had created. They coveted this world, because they understood how to make it better (DR372, p.26)

Fascinated with the new world, the gods attempted to improve on the primordials’ work. They created natural life, tamed the churning elements, and created the sun and moon in the world. Some sources claimed that angels were formed out of the astral essences as divine assistants to create mortal races during this time. (DMG, p.161; W&M, p.56)

  • The god He Who Was created humans (R&C, p.22; PHB, p.47).  Alloces, an angel of the humans’ creator became more sadistic with time, perhaps even slaying other angels who tied to rein him in (DR373, p.36).
  • Some angels, out of love and desire for the mortal world, gave up their true immortality, made deals with the recently awakening primal spirits, and took on a semblance of mortality, becoming devas (DR374, p.42).
  • Corellon discovered the Feywild and created elves to inhabit it. (The name of this unified elven race is contested.) (R&C, p.34; DR361, “A Fractured Family”).
  • Io fused astral spirits into the raw elements to create dragonkind. The greater spirits became the dragons, while the lesser spirits became the dragonborn to serve the dragons (R&C, pp.24, 26).  Though many dragonborn believe that they spawned from the blood of Io when he was sundered into Tiamat and Bahumut.
  • Lolth created the art of weaving after watching spiders make their webs, becoming a deity of fate who wove the strands of mortal destiny (MM, p.247).
  • Maglubiyet may have created the goblinoid races, however, they all tend to worship Bane now and Maglubiyet is his exarch (DR372, p.27).
  • Melora and Sehanine created the halfling race but abandoned them as their interests waned. Later, Avandra adopted the nomadic race as they exemplify her ideals (PHB, p.45).
  • Moradin chiseled dwarves from the bones of the earth. (R&C, p.28; DMG, p.165) Shortly after creating dwarves, legends state that Moradin created a divine beverage, not realizing his creation was watching carefully (DR369, p.17).
  • Zehir, unable to properly create his own race, persuaded Avandra to teach him how to alter the creations of others.  Avandra did so but attached a condition that Zehir may do so only with the creator’s permission (R&C, p.22).
  • The primordials created the giants to serve them, taking inspirations from the smoother, symmetrical creations of the gods. (W&M, p.32) The fire giants selectively bred hell hounds “thousands of years ago” until a new breed emerged – firebred hell hounds (MM, p.160).

Envious primordials demanded dwarves of their own. Pleased that the primordials appreciate his creations, Moradin gave generously and returned to his work. (R&C, p.28; DMG, p.165) After Moradin gave the primordials his dwarves, the primordials gave the dwarves to the giants as slaves, which the giants used to carve an empire. Moradin either could not hear their cries over the sound of his own hammering or that he could not face the wrath of so many primordials alone. Eventually, some dwarves became infused with the elements, becomingand. (R&C, p.28; W&M, p.32; MM, pp.22, 114, 120)

The Dawn War Edit

Tharizdun Edit

Tharizdun grabbed a shard of pure evil, driving him mad with a desire to unmake reality. He planted this shard in the Elemental Chaos, resulting in the Abyss. (MM, p.52; DMG, p.163; DR373, p. 54; DR376, p.12; DU172, p.90)

  • Primordials were transformed into demon princes, and also spawned original demon princes. (MM, p.52; DMG, p.163; DR373, p. 54; DR376, p.12; DU172, p.90)
  • A tribe of djinn was transformed into dust demons. (SotEC, p.132)
  • Efreet were transformed into ash-wrought soulburners. (SotEC, p.133)
  • Slaads were transformed into void slaads or consumptive swarms. (SotEC, p.133)

Tharizdun convinces many Primordials that the gods had to be stopped. Many, including Codricuhn, joined Tharizdun willingly, deceived with promises Tharidun has no intention of keeping. These Primordials joined Tharizdun in the Abyss and were corrupted into demon princes. (MM, p.52; DMG, p.163; DR373, p. 54; DR376, p.12; DU172, p. 92)

Tharizdun was then imprisoned by the other gods. However, the birth of the Abyss convinced the primordials that the gods had to be stopped. (MM, p.52; DMG, p.163; DR373, p. 54; DR376, p.12) Shortly thereafter, the gods gave the angel Alusiel the Ebon Stone, telling the angel that the stone held the essence of Thrizdun (though it does not). (SotEC, p.118)

In an alternate universe, however, Tharizdun succeeded in destroying the multiverse. This alternate Tharizdun ascended into something beyond all ken. The remnants of the destroyed universe coalesced into aberrant creatures called the sharn, eventually finging their way into the Underdark of the World. (DR373, pp.54-55)

Enraged at the gods’ meddlings, the primordials set out to destroy the world rather than let it become the gods’ play-thing. The gods fought to save it and their mortal servants. Each god selected an aspect of creation to champion and care for during the war, defining their portfolios. (DMG, p.161; W&M, p.56)

The primordials, who outnumbered the gods, thought they would easily win. (SotEC, p.50) They did not organize armies. (SotEC, p.50)

The Armies Gather Edit

  • A primordial named Nehushta built and inhabited the now-ruined stronghold of Glaur that served as one of the central fronts in the Dawn War. (DR375, p.78)
  • The djinn allied with the primordials against the gods. (SotEC, p.52) The efreet elected to remain neutral. (SotEC, p.53) The dao also remained neutral (SotEC, p.64)
  • The primordials created archons as soldiers out of elemental spirits to fight angels and exarchs. (SotEC, p.130) The gods sought to subvert the creation of these elemental soldiers by reshaping elemental spirits. Medusas and doppelgangers were believed to be earth and water elementals reshaped by Zehir and Sehanine respectively. (MM, p.18; DR361, “Ecology of the Fire Archon”)
  • The primordials created abominations as living weapons. (SotEC, p.128)
  • When the horns of the gods sounded for war, Moradin either finally noticed the plight of the dwarves, or was finally ready to face the primordials. Enraged, Moradin aided the other gods in the war by supplying weapons and armor. (R&C, p.28)
  • Asmodeus became an advisor to Bane. (DR372, p.26)
  • The dragon god Io first refused to become involved in the Primeval War. (DR369, p.47)
  • Some good angels descended to the World, and made a pact with primal spirits, adding to the number of devas. (DR374, p. 42)
  • The abominations, such as astral stalkers and the Tarrasque, were created as living weapons by both sides of the conflict. (MM, p.10-13)
  • In the Dawn War, the gods created glorious constructs called astral warwings and other astral war engines to fill out their armies and counter the chaotic creations of the primordials. (DR371, p.71)

Battles and Casualties Edit

  • The god Achra defeated Tabrach-Ti, the Queen of Bronze. She was the first primordial to fall. Achra began to be called Bane from then on. (DR372, p.26)
  • In an early and violent period of the war, a powerful, blustering primordial named Heur-Ket invaded the Astral Sea, until stopped by Pelor, Erathis and Ioun when the gods fused their dominions together. The fused dominion became the city of Hestavar. (DR371, p.20)
  • In his arrogance, Io faced Erek-Hus, the King of Terror, alone. The primordial cleaved the dragon god into two halves, becoming Tiamat and Bahamut. A small shard independent of the two became the artifact known as the Arrow of Fate. The dragon gods slew Erek-Hus, then battled each other until Tiamat fled. Thereafter, the dragon gods contributed to the primeval war alone. Another legend claimed that dragonborn were made where Io’s blood fell. (MM, p.74; R&C, p.26) One shard of Io remained separate from both Tiamat and Bahamut, known as the Arrow of Fate (DU172, p. 5)
  • The first hydras sprang from the spilled blood of the primordial Bryakus. (MM, p.165)
  • The primordial Haemnathuun, the Blood Lord, was slain. His corpse was cast into the Astral Sea. His black blood filled the maze of tunnels which will eventually become the Keening Delve. (W&M, p.62)
  • The gods attempted to kill Orcus with a host of angels when the demon prince was away from the Abyss. The demon lord created rot harbringers to mock the failed attempt. (MM, p.223)
  • Orcus created his artifact Wand of Orcus. The wand’s skull was said to belong to a god of virtue and chivalry, although other sources claimed it belonged to a human hero instead. (MM, p.206)
  • Yeenoghu reputedly created his triple flail from the bones of a god he slew during this war (DR364, p.6)
  • During the "Dawn War", Baphomet was once a great Primordial or fallen god with ties to the natural world. He created the minotaurs as his soldiers in his bid to replace Melora as the god of nature. In batte, however, legend says his erstwhile ally Yeenoghu fled the field and Baphomet pursued the trator into the very Abyss. But when he was defeated, he threw himself into the Abyss rather than submit. Erathis and Moradin civilized the minotarus and helped them found the city of Ruul. (DR369, pp.7, 21)
  • The Primordial Mual-Tar the Thunder Spirit sought to reclaim the skies from the gods who had climed them. The gods drove it back into the Elemental Chaos, where Moradin chained and trapped it. (DR370, p.26)
  • In the latter days of the Dawn War, archons and other elemental soldiers began forgng increasing numbers of weapons, having learned the value of such tools from followers of the gods. (SotEC, p.76) They founded the mines of Irdoc Morda (SotEC, p.76)

The War Ends Edit

By banding together in small groups, the gods set out to destroy the mightiest primordials who usually operate alone. This tactic eventually won the gods victory. Exhausted by the war, the gods created astral dominions and retreated into their divine realms. (W&M, p.56) The primal spirits eventually declared an end to the Dawn War. (DR374, p. 42)
